Erg Chigaga vs Merzouga: Which Moroccan Desert to Choose
If you want the wildest Sahara experience in Morocco, choose Erg Chigaga from M’Hamid; if you want tall dunes with easy road access and plenty of camps, choose Merzouga (Erg Chebbi); if you only have one day from Marrakech, Agafay is a stony desert an hour away but it is not the Sahara. The right answer depends on how many days you have, whether you prefer a 4x4 or a camel trek, and how much comfort you want at night. Here is how the three compare, from a team based in M’Hamid El Ghizlane.

Erg Chigaga is the “real Great Desert”: you leave the tarmac at M’Hamid and drive about two hours of track, or walk several days with camels, to reach the dunes. Merzouga is easier and more developed. Agafay is a beautiful landscape for a sunset dinner but it will not give you the Sahara.
How many days do you need for a Moroccan desert trip?
This is the question we get most often. The dunes are far from Marrakech and Fes, so the trip needs time.
- 2 days / 1 night works for Agafay or a short stay at the Zagora dunes. For Merzouga or Erg Chigaga it is too short: you spend both days in the car.
- 3 days / 2 nights is the minimum to reach the big dunes from Marrakech. The pace is quick but you see Aït Benhaddou, the Draa Valley and one night under the stars.
- 4 days / 3 nights is our recommendation for Erg Chigaga. You get two nights in the desert, time for sandboarding and camel riding, and a slower drive.
- 5 days and more suits a camel trek from M’Hamid to Erg Zahar and Erg Chigaga, exploring areas most 4x4 tours never see.
If you are already in the south (Ouarzazate, Zagora, M’Hamid), a 2-day 4x4 trip to Erg Chigaga is enough for a first night in the dunes.
4x4 tour or camel trek: which should you choose?
The 4x4 tour covers long distances quickly and reaches remote spots such as the heart of Erg Chigaga, the Iriqui dry lake and the Sacred Oasis in a single day. It is the best option when you have only three or four days and want to see valleys, gorges, kasbahs and dunes.
The camel trek is the purest way to experience the desert. Walking beside the camels with a guide and camel handler, you settle into the silence, sleep in a nomad camp or under an open “star tent”, and drink tea with nomad families along the way. Treks of 2 to 7 days leave from M’Hamid, and 5 days is the sweet spot for most walkers.
Many travellers combine the two: 4x4 from Marrakech to M’Hamid, then a 2 or 3-day trek from there.
Nomad camp or luxury camp?
- Traditional nomad camp: simple tents, mattresses and blankets, tagines cooked over the fire, no electricity, shared toilets. It is the most authentic option and the one used on treks.
- Luxury camp: spacious tents with real beds, private bathrooms and a higher standard of cooking. Popular in both Merzouga and Erg Chigaga for honeymoons and special occasions.
Whichever you choose, the Milky Way seen in total silence, far from any light, will be the memory that lasts.
When should you go and what should you bring?
The ideal window is October to April, with days around 20-25°C and cool nights (cold in December and January, but camps provide thick blankets). Summer, from June to September, often exceeds 40-45°C and is not recommended.
Pack light covering clothes, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen, warm layers for the night, good walking shoes, a small first-aid kit, a head torch and some cash in dirhams for tips. Morocco is a safe destination, but beyond the marked tourist areas always travel with a local guide who knows the tracks.
FAQ
Is Erg Chigaga worth it compared to Merzouga? Yes if you value space and silence. The dunes are less tall than Erg Chebbi’s highest peaks but the sand sea is far larger and you may not see another camp.
Can you do Erg Chigaga in 2 days from Marrakech? Not comfortably. Marrakech to M’Hamid is 8-9 hours by road, then two hours of track. Plan 3 days minimum, or start from Ouarzazate or M’Hamid.
Which is better for children? Merzouga is easier logistically, but a private 4x4 tour to Erg Chigaga with a family-friendly pace works very well, and short camel rides at the camp suit young kids.
