Trekking in Morocco: Sahara Desert or High Atlas?
Desert or mountains? Choose the Sahara if you want silence, bivouacs, walking with a camel caravan and nomad immersion. Choose the High Atlas if you prefer valleys, villages, mountain passes, gîtes and high-mountain scenery. Morocco lets you walk in completely different environments, and the right trek depends less on the number of kilometres than on the experience you are after.
Our speciality is the desert trek from M'Hamid, run by our own local nomad team. We also offer several guided treks in the High Atlas with mountain teams suited to those routes, so you have a single contact to choose between regions without pretending one guide knows every terrain.

Choose by what you want to experience
- I want to sleep in nature: the desert is ideal for itinerant bivouacs and nights far from villages.
- I want to meet local life: in the Atlas, routes cross villages, cultivated valleys and traditional lodgings.
- I want to disconnect: M'Hamid and the Sahara offer a complete break: walking, silence, bivouac and a slow pace.
- I want a challenge: for altitude and physical effort, look at the High Atlas routes and Toubkal.

When to go: the season may decide for you
- Autumn: excellent for the desert, as temperatures become pleasant again in M'Hamid; also a fine period for many mountain hikes.
- Winter: the Sahara is the better choice. Desert days are generally pleasant but nights can be cold; at altitude, snow can change conditions.
- Spring: two excellent options, both M'Hamid and several Atlas routes, depending on altitude and conditions.
- Summer: prefer altitude. Strong heat makes long Saharan treks far less suitable, while high-mountain routes come into their own.
Our real speciality: the Sahara of M'Hamid
We offer several ways to trek in Morocco, but we want to be transparent about what really sets us apart: the M'Hamid desert is our home ground. Our local team knows the routes around Sidi Naji, Erg Zahar, Erg Essmar and Erg Chigaga, the tracks, the bivouac sites and the logistics needed for several days on foot in the Sahara. For our mountain programmes we rely on guides and teams suited to the Atlas.

A trek for every level
- First itinerant hike: if you are a beginner, favour a short duration and a route with no major sporting goal. The 2- or 3-day desert treks are a good first approach.
- Multi-day trek: to really change pace, choose several days of walking with a different place to sleep each night: bivouac in the Sahara or gîtes in the valleys.
- Sporting goal: altitude, elevation gain and some High Atlas routes demand more preparation. Toubkal is for hikers in good physical condition.

Frequently asked questions
Where are the best treks in Morocco?
It depends on the landscape you want. The Sahara around M'Hamid is ideal for itinerant treks with bivouacs and nomad culture. The High Atlas suits valleys, villages, passes and high-altitude hiking.
What is the difference between a desert trek and an Atlas trek?
In the desert, the trek crosses dunes, regs and hamadas with nights in bivouac and Saharan logistics. In the Atlas, routes involve more elevation gain and pass through valleys, villages, gîtes or refuges.
What is the best season for trekking in Morocco?
It depends on the region. Autumn, winter and spring suit the M'Hamid desert particularly well. For the high mountains, the best periods depend on altitude, snow and the planned route.
Do I need to be sporty to trek in Morocco?
Not necessarily. Some short programmes are accessible to travellers with normal fitness. Long treks, big elevation gains and high mountains require more endurance.
Where do you sleep on an itinerant trek in Morocco?
In the Sahara, nights are mainly in bivouac depending on the trek. In the mountains, programmes may use gîtes, refuges or bivouacs.
Who carries the luggage during the trek?
In the desert, camels handle the logistics on several programmes. In the Atlas, portage is usually done by mules when included in the trek.
Which trek should I choose to discover the Sahara?
Our treks from M'Hamid last 2 to 7 days. A short trek gives a first immersion, while longer treks reach areas such as Erg Zahar, Erg Essmar or Erg Chigaga.
