3-Day Desert Tour from Ouarzazate: Draa Valley, M'Hamid & Erg Chigaga

The only 3-day desert tour starting in Ouarzazate. Descend the Draa Valley to Tamegroute and M'Hamid for lunch with a local family, a visit to the old kasbah and an evening of Sahrawi music. Day two is a camel trek across the Draa hamada to the sacred oasis and the dunes of Erg Chigaga for sunset and a night at the nomad camp, before returning via Oulad Driss.

Itinerary

  1. Day 1: Ouarzazate – Draa Valley – Tamegroute – M'Hamid9:00 departure over the Tizi n'Tifntit pass (1,760 m), panorama over the Draa Valley and stop in Agdz. Visit Tamegroute's Koranic library, underground kasbah and pottery workshop. Lunch with a local family in M'Hamid, visit of the old kasbah, then dinner by the fire with Sahrawi music. Night in a nomad tent or with the family.
  2. Day 2: M'Hamid – Camel trek – Erg ChigagaLate breakfast, then a camel-and-walking trek across the Draa hamada with lunch in the shade of tamarisks. Continue by 4x4 to Erg Chigaga with a stop at the sacred oasis. Sunset on the dunes, dinner, campfire and traditional music at the camp.
  3. Day 3: Erg Chigaga – Oulad Driss – Tamegroute – OuarzazateBreakfast facing the dunes, then return with optional stops at the nomad house-museum in Oulad Driss and Tamegroute. Free lunch on the way and arrival in Ouarzazate in the late afternoon.

Where do we sleep?

Night 1 in a nomad tent or with a local family in M'Hamid; night 2 at a comfortable camp in the dunes of Erg Chigaga.

Do I need to be fit?

No. The trek alternates walking and camel riding and is accessible to everyone. Bring comfortable shoes.

Are the meals traditional?

Yes. Berber and Sahrawi dishes prepared with local produce, served at camp and with our host family.

Are the cultural stops optional?

Yes. The nomad house-museum in Oulad Driss and Tamegroute are optional stops on the way back, depending on what you feel like.
