See the two major ergs of southern Morocco in three days, all by 4x4 and with no walking required. From M'Hamid, drive to the old caravan market of Sidi Naji and the 'singing dune' of Erg Zahar, then via the oasis of Erg Smar to Erg Chigaga, sleeping each night in a wild bivouac with music around the fire.

Itinerary

  1. Day 1: M'Hamid – Sidi Naji – Erg ZaharDeparture by 4x4 from M'Hamid between 9 and 10am. Stop at Sidi Naji, once a caravan market, then on to the dunes of Erg Zahar, the 'singing dune'. Wild bivouac with individual tents, dinner and music around the fire.
  2. Day 2: Erg Zahar – Erg Smar oasis – Erg ChigagaDrive across the desert to the small oasis of Erg Smar for a break, then continue to Erg Chigaga, the largest erg in Morocco. Sunset from the dunes and second night in a wild bivouac.
  3. Day 3: Erg Chigaga – M'HamidFree time to climb the great dunes at sunrise, breakfast and return by track to M'Hamid at the end of the morning.

Frequently asked questions

Is there any walking on this tour?

No, everything is done by 4x4. You can walk as much or as little as you like on the dunes at each stop.

What is a wild bivouac?

A camp set up by our team where there is no fixed infrastructure: individual tents, mattresses and blankets, a kitchen tent and dinner around the fire. There are no showers, but you sleep in total silence under the stars.

Can I add a camel ride?

Yes, a camel ride is available as an option for 15 EUR per person.

Is this a private tour?

Yes. All our departures are private, in small groups of 1 to 8 people, with your own vehicle, driver and local guide. Dates are flexible and the programme can be adapted to your group.

What should I pack?

Light, breathable clothes for the day and a few warm layers for the evening, comfortable closed shoes, a hat, sunglasses and sun cream. Blankets are provided, but bring a sleeping bag if you have one for extra comfort.

2-Day Erg Chigaga Desert Tour from Ouarzazate by 4x4

The fastest way to reach the great dunes of Erg Chigaga from Ouarzazate. Drive down the Draa Valley, visit Tamegroute's Koranic library and potteries, ride a camel at M'Hamid and watch the sunset from the dunes before a night at a comfortable nomad camp. Return by the dry Lake Iriqui, Foum Zguid and the carpet cooperative of Taznakht: a full loop with no backtracking.
